Adam Jones, Chris Waters, Lou Montanez, Hayden Penn?

The Orioles received terrible news Tuesday afternoon when a scan of Adam Jones' foot revealed a fracture. The rookie centerfielder was beginning to really show off all of his five tools prior to the injury. He is presumed to be out for four to six weeks, but I think the team should let him heal fully and send him to the Fall League to get his at-bats in. Jones is replaced on the active by Lou Montanez, who I will touch on later. This injury seems to also increase the likelihood that Jay Payton will not be traded before the waiver deadline on August 31.

Rookie left-hander and 27-year-old Chris Waters made his major league debut against the best team in baseball Tuesday night. Waters gave up one hit, three walks and a hit batter for eight innings while the Orioles built a 3-0 lead. George Sherrill closed out the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim giving up only one hit. Waters, a former first round pick of the Braves in 2000, has toiled in the minors and came to the Orioles as a minor league free agent. Never having a record above .500 on levels higher than A-ball, Waters looked as if he knew exactly how to pitch. This could have been to lack of familiarity by the Angels, but when he makes his next start, we'll see if he continues this trend.

Now for Lou Montanez. Montanez, another former first round pick in 2000, was leading the Eastern League in the triple crown categories before being called up by the O's. Montanez, the Cubs first round pick, is a 26-year-old that the game seems to have clicked for this season. Hopefully he can make a difference for the Orioles down the stretch filling in for Adam Jones. More on Jones' injury and Montanez's call up on masnsports.com.

Hayden Penn the once-prized Orioles pitching prospect was supposed to get the start against the Angels instead of Waters. Unfortunately for him, in his start Saturday August 2, Penn went 2/3 of inning due to getting cut by a shattered bat. He bounced back in his start last night pitching five shutout innings in the Norfolk Tides 5-3 win. I think if Dennis Sarfate struggles in his next start against the Rangers, Penn will be called up and Sarfate will go back to the bullpen where he was very successful this season.
